6 Skincare Resolutions for the New Year
by Probe Progen 0 Comments
Christmas has come and gone, and it’s time to make New Year’s resolutions! Now, before you say “eat well and lose weight,” just hold on a moment — everyone has those resolutions. While it’s great to add them to your list, it might be a good idea to consider other areas of your life that you could improve in.
One such area is skincare! There’s always more work that can be done in the service of your skin, even if you’ve been blemish-free for years. As experts in skin analysis technology, we know how complex and nuanced skin health is, and even if you consider yourself to be someone who’s pretty proactive about skincare, there’s probably still more that you can do.
Here are some skincare new year’s resolutions that you can consider for the coming year!
Skin Care Resolutions
1 - Start the Day Off Right
As with many other aspects of your life, the steps you take in the morning can have a profound impact on how the rest of your day goes, and this is absolutely true with skin. It’s great to start the day off with nice, clean skin. When you apply moisturizer or makeup on top of dirty skin, it can clog your pores and decrease your overall skin health.
Washing your face every morning is a must — the shower is a great place for a good cleansing, but if you shower at night, make sure you give yourself a good rinse when you wake up and top it off with your preferred facial cleanser.
2 - Wear Sunscreen
We have an unfortunate societal expectation that sunscreen is only used to prevent sunburns. Most people are smart enough to apply it when they go on outdoor adventures that will put them under the sun for multiple hours, but the people who apply sunscreen on a regular basis are few and far between. This needs to change!
UV rays from the sun have always wreaked major havoc on human skin, and they always will. The sun isn’t going to change its habits, so we need to adapt. If you apply sunscreen at a minimum of 30 SPF before you go out each day, you’ll do a lot in the long-term to prevent the damage that the sun naturally incurs on your skin.
Even when you aren’t getting burnt, UV rays destroy the collagen in your skin. Collagen is the connective tissue that holds your skin together and keeps it young and elastic. When it breaks down, you’re more likely to experience wrinkles, spots, and loss of elasticity. UV rays are also a cancer risk, so do yourself a favor and protect yourself against them!
3 - Remove Your Makeup With Micellar Water
Most women have a general understanding that sleeping in makeup is bad news, but sometimes it happens anyway. Removing makeup can be a chore, especially when you’re so exhausted that you feel your eyelids compelling you fall asleep then and there, bedtime routine be damned. But if you give in to that temptation, the makeup can mix with the dirt and oil on your skin and clog your pores. This, of course, leads to acne breakouts.
So, what’s the deal with micellar water?
Micellar water has become an increasingly popular choice for makeup removal because its ingredients work in perfect harmony to wipe the makeup off with virtually no resistance.
Micellar water looks and feels like normal water, but tiny traces of surfactants such as glycerin create microscopic spheres called micelles, which are extraordinarily good at catching dirt and oil. If you haven’t tried micellar water yet as a makeup removal choice, we highly suggest you give it a try!
4 - Clean Up After Breaking a Sweat
This is a bit of a good news/bad news situation. The good news is that working out can actually be great for your skin. This is because any workout is bound to produce a lot of sweat, and sweating, being a natural process, actually cleans out a lot of the dirt and grime in your skin, reopening your pores.
The bad news is that, if left alone, the sweat will dry anew, and if it’s filled with all that gunk it washed out, it’s just going to seep back into your skin. That’s why you should be proactive about rinsing after you’ve broken a sweat!
This is most applicable for when you go to the gym, but it also applies pretty much any time that you break a sweat. If you’ve done a taxing physical activity at work, ran a good distance, or spent the night partying on the dance floor, you’ll benefit from cleaning your skin immediately afterward.
5 - Exfoliate Regularly
Did you know that an average adult takes just short of a month to fully regenerate skin cells? For the uninitiated, the skin regularly replenishes itself, and predictably, the older it is, the more susceptible it is to damage.
Fortunately, there are things you can do to expedite the process and clear off old nasty skin. The answer is exfoliation. Exfoliation, more or less, is the act of applying a semi-rough texture to your skin to “tear off” the dead skin that you have no need for.
There are several viable exfoliation methods. Many lotions and scrubs have exfoliating properties, being made up of a more rough and grainy texture. There are also pads and loofas that are designed for exfoliation — they’re not soft and smooth, but that’s the point! Sometimes, you’re actually doing your skin a favor by being a little rougher with it.
6 - Order Skin Analysis Services
Finally, one of the best things you can do for your skin is to just be aware of its overall health. If you’ve never heard of skin analysis services, the gist of it is that you can get a comprehensive rundown of exactly what your skin health looks like.
A qualified skin technician will use a skin analysis machine, which inspects your skin at a microscopic level. This reveals all kinds of useful information — you can get a good look at all the layers that make up your skin, what your collagen levels look like, how empty or clogged your pores are, and much more detailed information that your skin technician can break down for you.
In a nutshell, going in for skin analysis allows you to get a “big picture” version of your skin’s overall health, and from there, you can create a plan of action on how to treat it. There are countless subtleties and discrepancies between skincare products, lotions, and creams, and what might work well for one person could actually be disastrous for another. By going in for a skin analysis checkup, your skin technician can guide you to the products that will be best for your specific circumstances.
