Let's learn about the final layer of our skin: The subcutaneous fat, also known as the hypodermis
This layer of skin is the deepest within and its main component is fat and connective tissues. These connective tissues protect more blood vessels and nerves. This layer is active in regulating body temperature, much like its predecessor the dermis. This layer tends to be thicker, but the thickness is different for each person. The hypodermis has many jobs just like the other previous layers of the skin.
Connecting - This layer of skin has many tissues that attach to the dermis and which assists the dermis in attaching to your other muscles and bones.
Assists - The blood vessels and nerves that begin in the dermis trickle down into the hypodermis and then travel throughout the rest of the body. As the blood vessels move down to this layer, they do become larger as well.
Control - This layer is responsible for keeping your body at the proper temperature. The hypodermis attempts to keep you from feeling to overheated or too cool at any given time. Exceptions for when the hypodermis may not be able to complete this task is when you are ill and have a fever.
Fat Storage - Even though when you hear the word fat, your first connotation is negative, extra fat within the skin is how you are protected from falls and bumping into things. This extra layer of fat, known as pads, protects your bones and muscles from extreme trauma.
While the layer is not made up of multiple components, it is the sole protector of your inner organs and muscles. Think of this layer of skin as a barrier, or an undershirt. This layer protects your skin and body from dangerous forces such as pathogens. The hypodermis can help regulate your body's temperature by trapping in heat or cold due to the blood vessels and nerve endings that are woven throughout it.
As we age, this layer of skin becomes thinner, which increases the risk of hypothermia and other extreme symptoms of not being able to control the body’s temperature. Not only does the loss of this layer cause difficulties in controlling temperature it also affects how much our bodies produce sweat. You must also be wary of certain medications, as they can affect you because they cannot be absorbed through this layer of skin since it is dissipating.
Lastly, this layer is used for survival in the most extreme situation. This layer of the skin is additionally a food storing area of the body that we can use in case of an emergency where food is hard to attain. This layer of skin also helps give our body it’s unique shape.
This layer of skin is much more prominent on thicker parts of the body such as the buttocks, thighs, and abdomen but still is present all over the body. It is important to understand all aspects and layers of the skin, so you can value its importance to you. When people have skin conditions it not always controlled on the face.
